Summary

My life's journey has taken me from a 20-year public relations professional to entrepreneurial endeavors that allow me to share my passion for photography and public relations/marketing. I help new and aspiring photographers learn to take great pictures during walking workshops around Washington, DC's picturesque locations. I continue to grow a community of photography enthusiasts with my Meetup group, Shutterbug Excursions.

Founder at Shutterbug Life

January 2014 - Present

Founder of Shutterbug Life community, where beginner and enthusiasts learn how to create great photos, build an audience and make an impact with their photography.

  • Shutterbug Life supports emerging and enthusiast photographers with the following resources:
  • Shutterbug Life, a weekly photography lifestyle podcast and blog;
  • Photography Meetup groups in Washington, DC and New York City;
  • Facebook group for Meetup members;
  • Photo Tours that teach photographers in Washington, DC; New Orleans; and New York City; and 
  • Photography Mentoring Club, an online membership community.

As a photography coach, taught thousands of photographers while leading more than 600 workshops. Throughout the life of the photo tour business, which includes workshops in Washington, DC, New Orleans, and New York City, attendees consistently give 98 percent approval ratings.

In January 2015, launched the weekly photography podcast, Shutterbug Life. Through a series of discussions, expert interviews and photo challenges, the podcast inspires emerging and enthusiast photographers to be better photographers.

The podcast grew out of monthly free webinars I conducted for four years. Webinar speakers have included: Sharon Farmer, former White House director of photography; Evelyn Hockstein, a NY Times international photojournalist who showed her work from Israel and Kenya; Brandon Stanton, who has creates street portraits for the blog Humans of New York; and Hannele Lahti, a travel photographer who contributes to National Geographic.

 

President & Photography Coach at PhotoTour DC

May 2010 - Present

President and lead instructor of PhotoTour DC, the Washington, DC region's photography instruction and narrated tour guide experience. Aspiring and amateur photographers learn to take great pictures while touring Washington, DC's favorite locations. PhotoTour Excursions visits the top destination locations in the Nation’s capital. Our Signature Excursions explore the Washington, DC Icons on the National Mall, the Annapolis Harbor at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and the Adams Morgan neighborhood in Northwest Washington, DC. Our Specialty Excursions capture cultural and historic sights, along with the rich colors of the seasons.

 

 

Senior Manager, Public Relations at Raytheon

April 2008 - May 2010

Led the international communications and global media relations programs for Raytheon’s $4 billion business. Network Centric Systems international communications responsibilities included developing programs to build brand awareness and support strategic pursuits in key international regions. Developed the strategy for international communications campaigns led by business communications teams supporting each product line. Leads media relations effort for domestic and international programs. Developed media relations strategy and oversaw execution of campaigns led by business communications teams.

 

Manager, Public Relations and Communications at Raytheon

September 2005 - April 2008

Provided strategic communications counsel to leadership team of Security and Transportation Solutions business. Developed strategic communication program to position the business, build brand equity in an emerging market space, and support strategic pursuits. Responsibilities included media relations, marketing communications, advertising, and organizational communications. Led two communications campaigns supporting major pursuits that earned company-wide awards, one for Best Strategic Communications Program and the other for Best Communications campaign.

 

Chief of Community Relations at U.S. Coast Guard

December 2002 - September 2005

Directed the community relations and public outreach program for the U.S. Coast Guard worldwide. Set policy and guidance for public affairs practitioners and community relations volunteers. Directed Coast Guard national outreach programs, to include NASCAR’s Coast Guard Race Team, Coast Guard Art Program, Coast Guard band, and Honor Guard. Managed the Coast Guard’s relationship with military support organizations and associations. Managed the Coast Guard branding effort, to include evaluating commercial requests for use of Coast Guard images and insignia and granting permission.
