Learn composition and creativity for better photography

even if you think that you aren’t naturally creative

My photography keep rate increased dramatically when I learned this skill

Back when I was learning photography in New Orleans, I remembered that no matter how I tried I could not make it look interesting. Of course I knew it possible, because I would pass all these spectacular photos in the galleries…of the exact locations where I’d just bombed. It continued for longer than I’d liked. I’d go out to shoot and maybe one or two from the entire day looked remotely like I wanted. That dismal keep rate was incredibly frustrating. And then I developed a skill that would turn around my fortunes.

How I turned it around

I learned to see like my camera. More importantly, I started to develop my composition and creativity. And that one skill turned things around more than anything else I learned.

Now when I went out to shoot, it took dramatically fewer shots to create the image I saw in my head. In fact, I could be more efficient. Go out. Get the shot, and get back.

This also helped when I started working with clients. I could be more confident that I was going to be able to create something good no matter what they threw at me.

 I also learned by teaching

But just knowing innately how to do was good enough for me but not to be able to teach it. From 2010 to 2017, I taught about 600 weekend workshops around Washington, DC. In that time, I got to see a lot of photographers who came in with the same struggle. They were not happy with results of their photography. They knew something was missing or not interesting and they couldn’t figure out why. And now I had to learn how to get others to see with the same clarity.

This is a problem every photographer has to solve. You can go on as many photo walks and destinations but you’ll always come back with mediocre results. You can buy new cameras and lenses, but you will always be frustrated with your results. That’s why I made it my mission to simplify learning this skill, so anyone could do it.

They way most teach composition is flawed

Most of us learned composition by memorizing a bunch of rules. And while those rules are important, unless those scenarios are obvious, they might not be as helpful. I came up with a way to get you to work through a series of choices that can lead you to a dramatic composition fairly quickly. It works in any situation and with any camera. It is something that anyone can learn, even if you are a new photographer, or even if you don’t think of yourself as creative.

I will be teaching that system in a new hybrid course & coaching offering.

Learn composition and creativity for better photography

Even if you think that you aren’t naturally creative

In this course, you will learn how to see more creatively and understand composition so you can take photos with more impact and interest.

Here’s how it will work

Module/Session 1

Live session where I teach the core principles of seeing and creating better composition. We will cover some basic skills and then drills you can do to help you get better at seeing the way your camera does. You will also be able to work through a process to get you to much better composition. It will also include a photography challenge and assignment to work on the principles you have learned.

Module 2/Session 2

Pre-recorded lesson on the 30 rules and principles of composition. This will start with the basics and progress through principles of composition and design. This lesson should give you a good appreciation and mental inventory of the types of composition and creativity tools you can apply in any situation.

Module 3/Session 3

This is a live feedback session to provide coaching on your images. We learn by doing, and this is your opportunity to put the prior sessions into practice. Since it is live, you will be able to interact and ask follow-up questions during your feedback session.

This system works! I have seen it with countless students

Lynford Morton’s Creative Composition program was accessible on many levels: it was well-organized, provided excellent, instructive examples and it identified and expressed the important components of composition effectively.

I am really enjoying your thought-provoking modules. I have taken some shots, keeping in mind your suggestions... Thanks again for the modules. I’m finding them quite interesting.

Lyn has put together a terrific comprehensive and informative course on photo composition which goes from basic to more complex principles. It is easy to follow, you can work at your own pace, and I learned a lot!

Really like the composition course... Watching it when I have time, can go back to watch certain parts again. Great! I did 101, especially the one on leading the eye gave me some nice ideas. Hope you do more of these courses in the future.
